This small acrylic painting “Flying Leap” 6″x6″ acrylic on panel is part of Canine Art Guild’s online summer exhibit “The Great Outdoors” was awarded the Merit Award by juror Sharon Will. This exhibit features artwork by CAG Members that represent dogs engaged in an activity and connecting with our wonderful outdoor world.
I always appreciate feedback from a juror when I have received a judge’s award, but it isn’t always provided. Here is what Sharon Will the juror for this show had to say: This dog jumping into the water just makes you smile. We can’t see his face, but we know there’s a big grin on it. The bold brush strokes and splash of the tail brings even more action and energy to the piece. This strong composition is successful by its simplified shapes and values, as well as having a dominate color temperature; warm with cool accents.
The Canine Art Guild was established in March of 2006. Consisting of fine canine artists from around the world, it is quickly becoming the place to find quality canine art on the web. The CAG is a unique association – made up of artists of all levels, seeking to legitimize art depicting canines, and to build a community for each other and the public.

This year’s calendar project has had the unexpected perk of introducing me to some new lab loving friends right here in my own state!
The March 2013 Lab watercolor painting winners Kay and Jon Normington happen to live in Southern New Hampshire and they own the Windham Junction Country Gift Shop & Kitchen in Windham NH. When I received Kay’s photo entry of her 2 chocolate labs this Spring, I knew that I wanted to include them in the calendar this year. When Kay found out her dogs Chevy and Echo made the calendar, she invited me to visit the store and meet her labs.
So yesterday, I made the trek over to Windham, met Kay’s family, was introduced to some of the cafe’s super friendly customers and got to meet her choco boy Chevy and her newest addition, a yellow Lab named Tess.
It is a dog loving gift store and cafe located right at the head of the Windham Rail Trail and a good many of their customers are dog lovers. You can have breakfast and lunch out on the porch or on the lawn with your dogs by your side.
If you live in Southern New Hampshire or traveling up for fall foliage, it is a great weekend destination for a trail walk with your family and your pups and to treat yourself to some terrific homemade lunch afterward. I hear Kay makes killer salads and her husband Jon makes a different homemade soup every day. For instance, today’s specials are a quinoa vegetable soup and a grilled sandwich with havarti cheese and basil and drizzled with honey on country white bread. Does that sound amazing or what? I’ll be back again soon.
And Kay has proudly stocked her gift shop with the 2013 Labrador Retriever calendar! Thank you Kay and Jon for your enthusiasm for the calendar project!
I think I should plan to travel and meet all 13 Labrador Retriever calendar winners and their Labs! That would take me to Maryland, Arizona, California, Iowa, and Pennsylvania just to name a few destinations!
Calendars are available for purchase at the Windham Country Store Gift Shop in Windham, NH or from my online shop throughout the fall. Pick up one for yourself, or as a gift for a lab loving friend, coworker or family member.
